Drums Keys

If you're looking for a fun sideline to collecting vintage drums or if you'd like to find a low cost alternative in the collecting area, you may try to locate examples of various drum keys.

In the good old days, every manufacturer either had its own special shape or had at least a logo or name stamp on one of the thumbrod sections. The great early Leedy keys look a lot like skate keys and were designed with a screwdriver like middle piece designed for the slot headed rods.

By the 20s, we were on the way to standardizing the bottom of the keys so that they fit all 12/14ths rods.

Here are names to find: Camco, Duplex, Gretsch, Leedy, Leedy & Ludwig, Ludwig, Premier (slot head), Rogers and Slingerland. If you are really lucky, you may find a George Way, which was known as a Waybest.

Good hunting! If you'd like to learn more about vintage drums, then I invite you to get a copy of my book, "The Great American Drums".
