Drum Center of Indianapolis- Vintage Drums

Monthly Feature Story By Harry Cangany

Ron Spagnardi

We lost a good man in September, 2003. He was unique in drumming. His words, his actions and the bravery in challenging great risk, brought us all together. Like the Ludwigs, the Slingerlands, the Zildjians, Henry Grossman and a few others before him, Ron Spagnardi created something good for the drum community. Instead of building drums, Ron built words and pictures into his magazine, "Modern Drummer".

From it's launch almost 30 years ago, Modern Drummer has been the single greatest source for drummers around the world. It has been our voice.

I cannot compliment him enough. There are stories and interviews and pictures, ads, letters and more for all of us. But the window into Ron's soul was that he provided something for every interest, and while he promoted the new and upcoming, he also celebrated and preserved the past.

I never met Ron, although he published my book and articles for years. We spoke on the phone and corresponded. I felt I knew him, and we were friends. And I was so sorry for his family, friends and co-workers.

But what a legacy!

And right now, I have to believe that he is interviewing Gene and Buddy, Cozy Cole, Big Sid and a whole bunch of his drum heros.

God Bless You, Ron.
