Drum Center of Indianapolis- Vintage Drums

Monthly Feature Story By Harry Cangany

What Happens When We Run Out Of American Drums?

There are only so many Radio Kings and Black Beauties out there. So what happens when the best examples are tucked away in collections? What will be next?

A lot of interested parties have started collecting European drums- especially those from the United Kingdom like Premier, Ajax, Carlton and other fine brands. Still others seek early 60s-70s Japanese drums that were imported into the States.

We suspect Pearl and Hoshino (Tama) made Apollo, Whitehall, Dixie, Reuther, Werco, Zim-Gar and a host of other companies. The drums and hardware were similar, just the badges were different. North American distributors had them badged with their own in-house names.

The European and Asian drums had plastic coverings in some pearls and sparkles that resembled the American product, but often they were very different and often had garish sparkles and other tints to the pearls and agates in very different colors and patterns.

Who knows if that is where we are headed, but it is a thought when the other drums can be astronomical.

For information on classic American drums, I invite you to order an autographed copy of my book, "The Great American Drums" published by Modern Drummer.
