Drum Center of Indianapolis- Vintage Drums

Monthly Feature Story By Harry Cangany

White Marine Pearl

Every month the Drum Center brings back to fighting form sets and snares made in "days gone by". We never recover unless it's necessary and, when we do, we pick the closest copies of original finishes. Although I must confess, sometimes we really get tired of white marine pearl- the finish of Gene, Buddy, Louie and so many others.

I asked Bill Ludwig II once which finish had been the most popular in his long career with WFL and Ludwig. He piped right back- White Marine Pearl and then Black Diamond.

Leedy introduced marine pearl in 1927 and followed it with Gold Sparkle. The finishes then were made by Dupont and were called pyralins. Look at old fountain pens, eyeglasses and toilet seats at flea markets and you'll find original pyralins.

Those two colors started an avalanche- great finishes for almost 80 years and so many of them are with us and coming in. Leedy introduced Black Onyx in 1929 and in 2003- it's back!

If you'd like to learn about vintage drums and their finishes, then I invite you to order my book published by Modern Drummer, "The Great American Drums". It's only $19.95 plus shipping and I'll send you an autographed copy.
