Identifying Hoops

For most of us, there is no great difference in one company's snare or tom hoops from those from another manufacturer. For others of us, there's a great difference. For this vintage time period, I will focus on the 1960s and 70s.

* Camco/George Way is really easy. The hoops are tall with a slight rounded top flange. The ears are rounded.

* Fibes will resemble Ludwig- a wide ear.

* Gretsch hoops are die cast and very recognizable.

* Leedy (60s) used Slingerland hoops (Stick Savers).

* Ludwig- triple flanged with wide ears.

* Rogers- triple flanged like Ludwig but with a much narrower ear. Early 60s hoops also had a high middle section between the flanges.

* Slingerland- inward flange with rounded ears. Called Stick Savers or Rimshot hoops.

A lot of Camco, Ludwig and Slingerland hoops back then were made of brass. Try to find the "real deals" when you restore or collect Vintage drums.

You can learn more about these companies by ordering my book for Modern Drummer, "The Great American Drums". It's only $19.95 plus shipping and I'll send you an autographed copy.
