Drum Center of Indianapolis- Vintage Drums

Quality Issues- Who Is Best?

I have touched thousands of drums since I started as a hobbyist in 1964. I cannot think of a major brand that I have not owned or fixed or at least examined under a number of circumstances.

I am often asked who was best and who is best now. That is the best way to get fights started.

Today's manufacturing processes and competition means everyone is building great equipment.

For me in a historical rein, I have to salute four companies that innovated, copied and improved, completed and still influence the drum marketplace after decades.

I list those companies with all respect to modern drum builders. In no certain order, I salute Leedy, Ludwig, Slingerland and Rogers. These companies were giants. Here are a few of the reasons.

Leedy- incredible wooden shells, invention of the snare stand, visionary leaders- UG Leedy, George Way.

Ludwig- incredible metal shells, best strainers, visionary leaders- William F. Sr. & Jr.

Slingerland- best marketing, continuation of solid shell snare drums, visionary leaders- HH Slingerland Sr. & Jr.

Rogers- best engineering, advance bearing edges, visionary leaders- Henry Grossman, Ben Strauss and Joe Thompson.

Each company has a lot more pluses than these. You can learn more about these great drum companies in my book for Modern Drummer, "The Great American Drums". Contact us for information on how to get an autographed copy.
