The Beginnings of Modern Snares
I think the three things to consider to identify a modern
snare drum are: separate tension, a dependable strainer and, at least, double
flanged hoops allowing rods to pass through the hoops into the lugs.
Single
tension drums were prevalent until Leedy announced their modern lug in 1924. It
was stiff and not self-aligning. By 1930, the first really modern lug- the X-lug
from Leedy- was built and had self aligning (movable) lug nuts. Other than that
example, Duplex had tube lugs, which were separate tension, as early as the
1880s. So, that may be the time of the first modern lug.
Ludwig &
Ludwig developed, with a design by Robert Danley, the first modern strainer.
Leedy's Utility Model came out in 1912, but the Ludwig Pioneer strainer came out
in 1917. The thumbrod and throw arm design is still being used.
The
first modern hoops came out in 1916 from Leedy. These were aluminum cast hoops
from a drum called the "All-In-One". And then they disappeared. Most
drums back then used clips on straight flanged hoops. By 1924, Leedy offered the
first of their double flanged hoops.
