Harry Keeps Meeting Crickets
Thanks to the kindness and friendship of Bill Bush, free
lance writer for Guitar Player magazine, our modern drummer counterpart, Harry
Cangany, got to meet and hang out with Joe B. Mauldin, Tommy Allsup and Buddy
Holly's three siblings.
Bill interviewed all of these people plus
others crucial to the Buddy Holly life story. Harry got to meet all the first
and second series Crickets except for Niki Sullivan, who played rhythm guitar in
1957. From his departure until the summer of 1958, the Crickets were Joe B.
Mauldin on bass and J.I. Allison on drums. Then Tommy Allsup joined to play lead
guitar and was with Buddy's group the last eight months of Holly's life.
Harry
was just a little kid hanging out with Joe B and Tommy as well as with Larry and
Travis Holley and with their sister Pat Holley Kaiter. The H-O-L-L-Y spelling
was a mistake that just was easier to use.
Harry has admitted he knows
more about Buddy Holly than he can remember and just wants to play one song with
the Crickets. Pick your weapon, boys, he can play drums, piano or guitar- just
none of them very well.
If you would like to learn more of what Harry
knows about drums, though, we invite you to order an autographed copy of his
book for Modern Drummer, the
"The Great American Drums". It's only $ 19.95
plus shipping. | |
