Vintage Drum Valuations
The true value of any vintage product has to do with a
couple of interesting things that I'll call Valuation Factors. Certainly, the
first is the market. The ongoing jockeying between buyers and sellers is what
really drives the price. The second factor is publicity. Articles influence the
frenzy.
The case in point for the second valuation factor might be the
Rogers Dyna-Sonic. Just a few years ago, the Dyna-Sonic, in its wood shell
version, was a $300 drum. Today, it's eight times that amount.
The
number of wooden Dyna-Sonics is small, the demand is great, and through articles
in Not So Modern Drummer, Modern Drummer and other publications, not to mention
books by John Aldridge, Rob Cook and humbly, myself, a lot of attention has been
focused on that snare.
There are other raging stories too. I really
get amused when someone tries to shoot too low or too high on a vintage drum
product. My answer is always the same- (1) Let the market decide and (2) Let's
see what articles are out there.
Speaking of articles, if you'd like to
learn more about Vintage Drums, order an autographed copy of my book,
"The Great American Drums", published by
Modern Drummer. |
