Drum Center of Indianapolis- Vintage Drums

Monthly Feature Story By Harry Cangany

Watch China!

The whole musical instrument business is talking about the emergence of factories in main land China for manufacturing the shells, the hardware and the finishes. They are all top notch and at the pro level. It's not just the drums either in this pipeline- the guitar world and band instruments are also involved.

On the low end, we have seen some plating on zinc metal parts that could be better. But this is really just the beginning and we expect that results will get much better.

Part of me sighs out loud as I reread this, but it is reality and we must accept it. We have seen the future and it's here. Every North American drum builder has parts that come from Asia. Complete sets come to the United States and are never opened until they reach dealers. It's the way it is- and it's going to grow. Get used to it.

While we see great products being built at all levels, we still encourage drummers to reach out and get a vintage set or two tucked away.

If you'd like to learn more about the American Drums in the Golden Age, then I invite you to order my book, "The Great American Drums". It's only $19.95 plus shipping and I'll send you an autographed copy.
