Ludwig Jazz Festival
One of the hottest 60s snare drums in the vintage
marketplace is Ludwig's 8-lug woodshell snare- the Jazz Festival. Ludwig made a
more expensive snare- the Classic, which used the high-end Classic strainer
known for extended snares and a throw arm that sat above the top hoop.
The
Jazz Festival used the simple strainer known as the P83. An updated version of
that strainer, the P85, is still used on most Ludwig snare drums.
Part
of the interest in the Jazz Festival is that it was the model used by Ringo
Starr. His set was covered in translucent Oyster Black. Such a snare goes for
over $1200.
Other finishes are much less expensive. Most Jazz Festivals
are in the $300-$500 range. And, for that money, you'll get a three-ply piece of
heaven.
