Harry's been on this wild tangent for three months and
now it can be revealed. Our second secret of 1997 is our commemoration of the
85th anniversary of the maiden- and only voyage- of the Royal Mail Streamer
(RMS) Titanic. That voyage took place on April 10-14, 1912, until she struck an
iceberg for approximately 10 seconds. Less than three hours later at 2:20am on
April 15, the great ship broke in two and sank in over 12,000 feet of water and
took 1,523 lives with her.
Included in that number of human souls were
eight musicians who played until near the end- played to steady the nerves and
entertain any who could still hear. We salute all those who designed her, built
her, finished her and sailed her. And in our tribute is our 1997 DW set. Like
the Titanic before her, our set was painstakingly made by craftsman who hand
finished every detail. With four toms across to represent the four mighty
smokestacks of Titanic, our set is painted with a mixture of blue and green
sparkles over black lacquer. This, we feel, represents both the sea water and
the depth of it. Inside each shell is a sticker of authenticity. And on the
front head, we have an artist's painting of the ship at full steam.
Surrounding
the set are books, pictures and suggestive pieces from other ships. But we do
have a piece of Titanic's coal, rescued from the sea bottom. Stop in and see it
including the ship's clock which stopped at 2:20. Then prepare yourself for the
most expensive movie ever made. It's due out in June and known as Titanic.
And
when you think of the Titanic and the amazing story of her life, just remember
your friends at the Drum Center, who are out now, trying to top themselves for
next year's great scheme.
