Rereading The Leedy Drum Topics

Our good friend Rob Cook assembled the collected newsletters of the Leedy Drum Company into a great softback compilation.

From time to time, I just like to look at it and read a story or two. There are lots of tips and jokes that are outdated and pretty corny. Some of the information is still usable.

I enjoyed seeing pictures of Chee Foo Chinese-style tom toms. They came in four sizes, and one of them was a 9x13. The Chee Foos were late 20s drums. It's fun to know that Slingerland and Gene Krupa get credit for 9x13 toms when, really, the size existed 10 years before anyone made them tunable and Gene got famous.

And for those of you old enough to remember Spike Jones, as a teenager, is on page 177 as Lindley Jones from California. That was 1927.

Lots of pictures- some great old drums. Find a copy of Leedy Drum Topics. And speaking of books and vintage drums, I invite you to order a copy of my book for Modern Drummer- "The Great American Drums". It's only $19.95 plus shipping.
