Drum Center of Indianapolis- Vintage Drums

Monthly Feature Story By Harry Cangany

The First Rule... The Second Rule

I cannot believe how many homemade restorations I have seen. Bad finishes... contact paper... mismatched lugs... and the nefarious extra holes.

First response- leave the drums alone! Don't strip them, don't repaint them, leave the strainers alone. If you get a drum with a missing strainer, then take a new strainer, mount it on acrylic or metal and then put the complete mount on the drum using the old holes.

If the drum is pretty gone, write to me and let's come up with a plan. The first rule is to save them and the second rule is to bring them back.

There is always the great chance we can make them sing again as close to original as the talented workers at Leedy, Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, Gretsch, Camco, Duplex and the other great American drum companies who built them.

If you'd like to learn more about vintage American drums, then I invite you to get a copy of my book, "The Great American Drums".
