The Return of the Psychedelic Red

In November 2000, Jim Catalano of Ludwig announced the return of a hot 70s proprietary finish known as Psychedelic Red. It was an opaque swirl of red, blue and other colors that has been a hot item in the vintage marketplace. The only finish that brings more attention is the original 60s Oyster Black (transparent over mahogany).

Lugwig wanted to reissue it along with Mod Orange, an original 70s finish as well, but the samples obtained from the Italian manufacturer was not close enough for Jim's go ahead.

The vintage drum market is seeing the same kind of thing that has interested guitarists in the last decade- reissues of significantly interesting historical instruments.

Ludwig has brought back original Oyster Black, the Top Hat and Cane finish, the solid shell tube lug snare and brass Supraphonics and Black Beauties.

It really is a company on the move and interested in its own rich history. Let's see what happens.

If you'd like to learn more about the Ludwig Drum Company and the original products from 1920-1926, then I invite you to order an autographed copy of my book, "The Great American Drums", published by Modern Drummer.
